Facial Hair Transplant Toronto
Facial hair transplantation is gaining in popularity. While some parts of the world (e.g. India, Middle East) have long regarded thick facial hair as a sign of masculinity and virility, the Western world has more recently embraced the aesthetic appeal of robust moustaches, goatees, beards, sideburns and eyebrows.
In Facial Hair Transplantation, hair is restored to areas where growth is thin or missing. The procedure can be performed on areas where there is no hair, or on areas where hair growth is thin and more fullness is desired.
This procedure is most commonly performed on the goatee and moustache areas, but it can also be performed on beards, sideburns and cheeks. Facial hair transplants can also be used to conceal acne scars and other types of scars. The number of grafts required can vary but averages are as follows:
- Moustache: 350-500 grafts
- Full Goatee: 600-700 grafts
- Sideburn: 200-250 grafts (each)
- Cheek Beard: 300-700 grafts
- Uncommonly, some patients may require a second round of transplants if they desire a very thick density.
The key with facial hair transplantation is to use mostly 1- and sometimes 2-hair grafts, and carefully place them at the exact correct angle and direction to create the most natural appearance.
To minimize scarring, Dr. Alexander uses all-microscopically dissected grafts that can be placed in the smallest possible incisions. Once they’ve been transplanted, the hairs are permanent and typically grow with the same characteristics as your own facial hair. Moreover, the transplanted hair can be shaved just like you would with other facial hair.
Donor Hairs for Facial Transplantation
Donor hair for facial transplantation typically comes from the scalp. Which region of the scalp depends on where Dr. Alexander thinks the closest match between scalp and facial hair exists in you. Once transplanted, the hairs will grow permanently, and with similar quality and characteristics to your native facial hair, and it can be shaved.
Procedure & Recovery
The transplantation is performed under local anesthesia with mild oral sedation. Depending on the extent of the procedure, it can last 2 to 5 hours. Either strip technique or FUE can be used, depending on a variety of factors, which Dr. Alexander will discuss with you. The procedure itself is essentially painless, with a very smooth recovery period. Most are able to go back to regular daily activities 2 days after the procedure, and resume strenuous exercise in 1-2 weeks.
For the first 5 days after the transplant, tiny crusts will be present around each transplanted hair, and the transplanted area must be kept absolutely dry. The face will look like something was done for at least the first 3 to 4 days. Sutures that are placed in the donor area are removed at 1 week. The transplanted hairs fall out at around 2-3 weeks, then start to regrow at 3 months, where they will continue to grow for a lifetime.
